Whether you\u2019re cooling a swollen limb, or applying a poultice, these simple first\u2011aid skills help to ease your horse\u2019s discomfort and help you gather the information your vet needs to make the best decisions. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wound care<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wounds are stressful because they look dramatic and because horse\u2019s legs are not forgiving places to heal. The good news is that first aid is mostly about three things: safety, cleanliness and knowing when you need a vet now. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First rule: decide if it&#8217;s an emergency<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Call your vet urgently if:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bleeding will not stop<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The wound is deep, gaping, or near a joint or tendon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your horse is very lame, distressed or non weight bearing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a puncture wound, especially to the foot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can see something that looks like tendon, bone or synovial fluid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re at all unsure, err on the side of caution!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: make it safe<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Catch your horse, keep them still and protect yourself. If you can, move to a clean, well-lit area. Put gloves on if you have them. (This is also why a basic first aid kit, with essentials like bandages, antiseptics, wound dressings and scissors, matters.)   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: control bleeding<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there\u2019s active bleeding, apply firm pressure with a clean dressing or cloth. Don\u2019t keep lifting it to peek. If blood is soaking through, add more layers on top rather than removing the original pad. If bleeding continues, contact your vet.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: clean gently, do not scrub<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rinse the wound with clean water or saline if you have it. The goal is to remove dirt and let your vet see what they\u2019re dealing with. Avoid harsh scrubbing, powders or random creams. Keeping things simple is usually safer.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: cover it if it needs protecting<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some cuts are best left open, but if the wound is in a place that will get dirty, or if your vet has advised covering, dress it properly.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place a dressing pad over the wound, hold it with a soft bandage, add padding like cotton wool or clean gamgee, then secure with an outer bandage. Incorrect dressing can make things worse, so ask your vet to show you if you\u2019re not confident. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5: keep an eye on swelling &amp; lameness<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heat, swelling and increasing lameness after a wound are signals to take seriously. Cold hosing can help with swelling as a first step, but it should sit alongside veterinary advice, not instead of it. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 6: think about tetanus &amp; timing<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wounds are one of the moments when vaccination status really matters. If you don\u2019t know when your horse last had a tetanus booster, tell your vet. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A calm owner check list<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you call your vet &#8211; or whilst you&#8217;re waiting &#8211; it&#8217;s useful to gather:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A quick photo and a short video clip<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where it is and roughly how big it is<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether bleeding is controlled<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your horse\u2019s temperature if you know how to take it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tetanus vaccination date if you have it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understandably you&#8217;re worried and that&#8217;s normal. But, if you can make notes and take photos and videos, it means your your vet can triage properly and also helps you to feel less helpless.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there\u2019s one message to hold onto, it\u2019s this: first aid is not about fixing the problem on the yard.
